Writing Tips/Information

Ben Bova said, "Writers write."

It's the best piece of advice I ever received and it is the first piece of advice I share with other writers.  Write something every day.  You can do it!

That said, here are some things I find helpful:

  • Have a place to work that is comfortable and that provides an atmosphere conducive to your personal creative needs.  A room at home, a coffee shop, the library, wherever.

  • Write every day - even if it's only a sentence or two.  As Lawrence Block said, one page per day and at the end of the year, you have 365 pages.

  • Carry a notebook with you or develop another method of recording ideas when they come to you.  These tidbits are special pieces of inspiration and should retained.  (I email myself or leave voicemails for myself.)

  • Use a dictionary, a thesaurus and the encyclopedia.  Have a style manual and grammar guide nearby.  If you are unsure about a word or how to structure a sentence, look it up.  Language is more complex than mere spelling.

  • Read your work aloud.  You'll be amazed at what you find.

  • Concentrate on your writing until you finish your project.  Until you have something to sell, you don't need to worry about getting an agent, finding a publisher or marketing.

  • Writing for publication is hard work.  Like losing twenty pounds, it is rewarding but it requires commitment and dedication.

  • Don't quit your day job unless you win the lottery
